Michael J. Powers is a member with Defrees & Fiske whose practice is concentrated in employee benefits, taxation, and ERISA matters. Mr. Powers also has additional experience in estate and gift tax planning and compliance as well as general corporate law.
Mr. Powers advises clients on all aspects of employee benefits and ERISA, including qualified and nonqualified retirement plans, welfare benefit and cafeteria plans, executive compensation, fiduciary issues, benefit issues arising in mergers and acquisitions, benefit related litigation and COBRA and HIPAA compliance. Mr. Powers also has extensive experience in taxation, including federal, international, and state planning and compliance for corporations, partnerships, S corporations, exempt organizations and individuals.
Mr. Powers is a member of the Chicago Bar Association and serves on its Employee Benefits and Federal Taxation Committees. Mr. Powers received a degree in Business Administration with honors from Western Illinois University and a J.D. degree from the University of Illinois College of Law. Prior to joining Defrees & Fiske, Mr. Powers worked in the tax department of Arthur Andersen & Co.
